Diffusion/Osmosis Lab

Here are the results:
Note: We called green looking dye many different names including violet, blue, and green. I have labeled it as blue / green for our analysis because it makes it easier to understand.

So we got the expected result for the water + blue / green group (right side). Basically the green dye all diffused out of the bag and into the water. This is because the molecular weight of the green dye is less than 10,000.

The orange / blue + green group (left side) was not as successful. It should have been blue as well, but only made it to green. I talked to Ranjani about it and she said that if we did another water cycle, more of the green dye would have diffused out as expected. She showed me a set from the Tuesday lab group, which had a lot more time to diffuse. The orange / blue + green bag certainly looked more blue, though more closer to turquoise.

As you can see, the color of the water has clearly changed. The left side looks orange, and the right side looks translucent green. I should double check with Ranjani about this, but I think its safe to say that both the orange dye and the green dye have a molecular weight less than 10,000 since both diffused out of the bags.

I hope I have not confused or frustrated you. If I have lost you in any way, just make a comment, call, or facebook me and I'll try to answer a.s.a.p. Good luck writing the lab report!
